- Abstract
- June 26-28,2004. Tap dance historian and critic Constance Valis Hill invited to American Dance Festival in Raleigh, NC to conduct a three-day workshop with professional working dance critics at the ADF's Criticism Center on how to look at, listen to, and write about tap dance. This is the first time working dance critics had the opportunity to learn about intensive history off tap dance, write reviews, and discuss tap dance with jazz tap dancers at the festival. First chance also that tap dancers asked by critics, "how do we write about this form?" Tap dancers Roxanne Butterfly, Jason Samuels Smith, and David Gilmore, who performed on the Percussive Dance Festival of the Feet, replied, "Listen to tap dance as a musical structure: jazz tap dance is jazz music."
