- Abstract
- The Silver Belles were a group of 1930s and 1940s chorus line dancers who performed at the Apollo Theatre, the Cotton Club, and Broadway's Zanzibar Club. The group, founded by Geraldine Rhodes Kennedy, includes dancers making their debut three or four decades after retiring from the entertainment world. The Silver Belles performed at the Latin Quarter in 1987, the stomping ground for several members of the Belles when the club opened as Connie's Inn in 1935, becoming the downtown Cotton Club in 1936. The Silver Belles include: Harriet Browne, Marion Coles (former member of Miss Ristena Banks' #1 Chorus Line at the Apollo Theatre), Elaine Ellis (who danced at the Cotton Club, Apollo, and Club Zanzibar in New York) and Paradise Club in Atlantic City), Cleo Hayes (Apollo #1 Chorus), Hazel Walker Rogers (Apollo #1 Chorus), and Bertye Lou Wood (Lafayette Theatre, Connie's Inn, Captain of the Apollo #1 Chorus), choreographer of the Silver Belles. The show that also starred Sister Sledge and featured Joanne Norris, was directed by Coles and choreographed by jazz dancer Nat Horne.
