- By the early fifties, Baby Laurence and Teddy Hale were contemporaries and often pitted against each other. Recalling a battle of tap in the summer in the early fifties at the Club Harlem, Duke Ellington trumpeter Ray Nance says "It was the hottest night of the year, and Baby Laurence and Teddy Hale, the sweat pouring off them, fought to a draw." (Nugent in Stearns 350) Nance, a former dancer, could not decide who was better.
