- Abstract
- The Charles Honi Coles Award for Mentoring was established in 2001 to remember the life and work of Charles "Honi" Coles, master tap dancer, stage manager at the Apollo Theatre, and versatile performer. Coles would mentor young performers and did so with young, inexperienced vocal groups and individuals in the 1950s and 1960s who came to the Apollo Theatre. He would take them under his wing and teach them how to perform in front off a live audience. The Apollo's audience would not accept anything that was second-rate. Coles returned to tap dancing in the 1970s and found a whole new generation of dancers seeking his advice. Mrs. Marion Coles presented the first Charles Honi Coles Award for Mentoring to Jimmy Slyde.
