New York Committee to Celebrate National Tap Dance Day Miscellaneous 1988-05-25 The New York City Committee to Celebrate National Tap Dance Day, a nonprofit organization, is organized after National Tap Dance Day, designated by Act of Congress on May 25, 1988, in recognition of tap's contribution to American culture and to honor the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Flo-Bert, Ltd. was founded by historian and researcher of black entertainers, Delilah Jackson, in 1988 as a New York not-for-profit organization. It is both the organization's name and the annual Flo-Bert Lifetime Achievement Award for performing, teaching, or supporting the art of tap dance. The Committee's Statement of Purpose: To raise the public's appreciation for the unique art and skill involved in tap dancing, which is a true American creation, by presenting it in an entertaining, educational and multicultural way. To preserve on archival videotape for dance students and scholars of generations to come the dances, steps and visual personalities of the great tap masters of today and the emerging masters of tomorrow.
