- Abstract
- "Third Concert of Sacred Music, given a trial run at Queens College in 1975, played in its entirety at the Cathedral St. John the Divine, limited to snippets from all three of the Sacred Concerts, which were done by a troupe that included the Mercer Ellington Band, the Byrne Camp Chorale, the soloists McHenry Boatwright, Alpha Brawner-Floyd, Anita Moore, Tony Bennett, and Phyllis Hyman, the tap dancer Honi Coles, an Alvin Ailey group, and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. as narrator. .."David Danced Before the Lord" was among the ten numbers taken from the earlier concerts, but it was short and choppy. Coles never had a chance to get his momentum going, and the towering last chorus was omitted."
(Whitney Balliett, "Duke Ellington" the New Yorker, November 9, 1981, p. 156).
