Duke Ellington: We Love You Madly / Davis, Sammy, Jr. [television/video]
- Title
- Duke Ellington: We Love You Madly [Television/Video]
- Performer
- Davis, Sammy, Jr.
- Published/Created
- 1973-02-11
- Genre
- Television/Video
- Abstract
- Conceived by Quincy Jones directing the Ellington Orchestra in the 53-piece instrumental ensemble, this film is regarded as a musical tribute to the Duke rather than an "Ellington film" in the stricter sense of the term; an homage to the great composer, personality and colleague, created and performed primarily by performers who offer the original a bit of a twist: "In the Beginning God" and "Come Sunday" (from the Concert of Sacred Music) for example were performed by Joe Williams (vocal) and Paula Kelly (dancing) and Aretha Franklin & vocal trio respectively. "The Blues" with an off-screen introduction by Ellington over Clark Terry trumpet-obligato, has Sammy Davis, Jr. vocals and tap dancing in a duet with drummer Louis Bellson.
