- Chicago Defender 6/15/1954 in a story coming out of NYC reports that six "colored youngsters are currently in the runoff of the Original Amateur Hour's annual search for a national champion last Saturday (May 29). the Hamboners Quartet from Lancaster, PA and a four-year old drummer boy Burton Hurley. Hurley, a three-time winner is said to have been tapping out rhythms on the drums at ten months of age.
