- Abstract
- A musical play in three acts, 4 scenes. book, music and lyrics by George M. Cohan. Staged by George M. Cohan. Starring Jerry J. Cohan as James Belgrave, a United States Senator and George M. Cohan as George Belgrave, the Senator's son.
Cohan sang and strutted "The Grand Old Rag" and "If Washington Came To Life" and the chorus performed "Colonial Chorus."
Helen F. Cohan as Senator Belgrave's widowed sister, and Ethel Levey as the Senator's niece. Opened 12 February 1906 at the Herald Square Theatre and closed 21 April 1906 after 81 performances.
Senator Belgrave (Jerry Cohan), an Anglophile and boastfully contemptuous of his country, is determined that his son (George M.) will marry Lord Rothburt's languid arrogant daughter, Evelyn. But George loves Dolly Johnson (Ethel Levey), the niece of the straightforward Senator Hopkins. The hit of this Cohan show was "You're a Grand Old Flag." Dolly was given the show stopping song and dance, "I Was Born in Virginia."
