American Ballet Theatre's first staging of Agnes DeMilles's 1942 ballet drama "Rodeo" starred Beatrice Rodriguez as the cowgirl, Dermot Burke as the head wrangler, and Russell Sultzbach as the champion roper.
"What we didn't know about the roper all these years is that the roper is, like a cowgirl, a misfit. they are well matched. This is what Mr. Sultzbach's superbly flashy and eccentric portrayal brings out. From the start, we see him as a showoff, and his final tap-dance solo takes on new meaning. He too is hungry for attention."
(Anna Kisselgoff, "A 'Rodeo' At Joffrey Is Terrific" New York Times 30 October 1976, 17.)
