- Abstract
- The material in this collection is based on Lawrence Marwick's list of copyright entries, including both Yiddish American plays and music. Irene Heskes, working with the list, added the names of composers, lyricists, arrangers, theaters, copyright proprietors, and information about whether the song was published and by whom. Beyond information on a genre of American music, the book is a resource and access guide to the large number of Yiddish American popular songs available in the collections of the Music Division. The Yiddish American musical theater began in the Bowery area of the Lower East Side of New York City after1880 and quickly expanded through New York and into many communities in the United States. This art form, with its genre of popular Yiddish songs, not only served a special Jewish patronage, but also served as a portal by which the sounds of Jewish music entered mainstream American life.
- Contents Note
- The catalog for the Irene Heskes Collection of sheet music is titled Yiddish American Popular Songs 1895-1950: A Catalog Based on the Lawrence Marwick Roster of Copyright Entries. The collection has been arranged numerically according to the entries in the Catalog, which lists 3,427 Yiddish song titles, with the copyright number and date, composer and publisher for each. Brief information about each song and a description of the cover is also included. Some titles were not located within the holdings of any institution and are indicated as "unexamined” in her bibliography. A ‘container list' is included in the 1994 Guide to the Special Collections: The Irene Heskes Collection, by Joshua Waxman. Also included is a list of the Heskes Collection entries not available at the Library of Congress.
