- Abstract
- Conductor and composer Otto Klemperer (b. May 14, 1885 in Breslau, Germany; d. July 6, 1973 in Zurich) is known particularly for conducting orchestral music by Beethoven, Bruckner, Mozart, and Mahler, and contemporary music and operas, during the 1920s and 1930s. He composed symphonies, string quartets, songs, piano solos, choral works, and an opera; and also arranged works by Bach, Mendelssohn, and Mozart.
The archive consists of Otto Klemperer's papers which document his life and career. It contains manuscript and printed music, including holograph scores and sketches, copyists' printed scores and parts, and musical arrangements; correspondence; family papers; writings by and about Klemperer; interviews with Klemperer and others; legal and financial documents; clippings; programs, including many from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra; photographic materials; materials related to the Kroll Opera; and books annotated by Klemperer and his daughter Lotte. The archive also contains production and resource materials, including scripts, interviews, background materials, and photographs, that Philo Bregstein used in making a documentary film about Klemperer's life and work. - Contents Note
