- Abstract
- Viennese born composer Frederick Loewe (1904-1988) was a child prodigy, appearing as a 13 year old as a piano soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic. After immigrating to the United States in 1924, he left music for an itinerant life as a cowboy, gold miner and professional boxer before returning to New York as a pianist in Greenwich Village just before World War II. He got his start on Broadway in 1938. After teaming with Alan Jay Lerner in 1942, he began his prodigious career of turning out one Broadway hit after another. The Library of Congress is privileged to hold, as a gift from the composer, the autograph manuscripts for songs from Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, My Fair Lady (including songs cut from those shows), Camelot, and songs from less well known shows. There is also a small amount of correspondence, clippings and business papers and photographs. All audio/video materials were transferred to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Record Sound Division.
