- Abstract
- Substantial portions of the correspondence of Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) were given to the Library by the composer's family between 1952 and 1972. While the collection encompasses material from all periods of Schoenberg's life, the majority of the letters were written after Schoenberg emigrated to the United States in 1933. Schoenberg's two famous pupils, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, are represented by a long series of letters dating respectively from 1911 to 1934 and 1907 to 1936 and containing significant information on their creative work and personal lives. An important Wassily Kandinsky letter--Schoenberg exhibited his paintings with the Blue Rider group in 1912--deals with the artist's aesthetic philosophy. Other major correspondents include Rudolf Kolisch, Ernst Krenek, Gustav Mahler, Thomas Mann, Egon Wellesz, and Alexander Zemlinsky. Drafts and carbons of business letters, concert programs, and clippings documenting Schoenberg's early career are also preserved in the collection. The letters are organized by correspondent and, together with the other papers, measure four linear feet. Wire and disc recordings from the Schoenberg Collection preserve drafts for letters, a few lectures, a radio talk delivered in 1949, and a 1931 performance of Variations for Orchestra, op. 31. This material has been reproduced on three tapes and is listed in the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division catalog.
