- A reviewer, radio panelist, teacher, lecturer, and member of the Advisory Council of the Metropolitan Opera Archives, Charles Jahant (1909-1994)was critic for Opera News, Opera (London), and Lyrica (Paris). He reviewed the Washington DC music scene for the Christian Science Monitor from 1958 to 1978, and wrote program notes for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Opera, and Avery Fisher Hall, and liner notes for Time-Life Records. He was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of opera and contributed articles to the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Opera, the New Grove Dictionary of Music, and Harvard-Radcliffe's Notable American Women, as well as articles for such magazines as Saturday Review. He began donating his collection of photographs of opera singers to the Library of Congress in 1980. The collection contains nearly 2000 photos dating from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century, many of which are inscribed to Mr. Jahant.
