- Abstract
- Laurindo Almeida (1917-1995) was a Brazilian classical guitarist, composer and arranger who began his professional career as radio artist and staff arranger in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. From 1936 to 1947, he worked with various Brazilian artists, including Villa-Lobos, Carmen Miranda and Pixinguinha. Almeida moved to Los Angeles in 1947 to work in Hollywood studios. He Joined Stan Kenton's orchestra as a soloist, arranger and composer, and helped introduce the classical guitar tradition to jazz. In 1953, he recorded the pioneering jazz-samba fusion, Brazilliance, with saxophonist Bud Shank. He also recorded with the Modern Jazz Quartet and the LA 4. Almeida composed the scores to Old Man and the Sea and Goodbye, My Lady, and he is heard on hundreds of film and television soundtracks.
