- Abstract
- Hugo Leichtentritt (b. Jan. 1, 1874, in the province of Posen, Prussia; d. Nov. 13, 1951, in Cambridge, Mass.) was a German musicologist, music critic and composer.
The papers contain Leichtentritt's original music manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, programs, scrapbooks, articles and drafts of Leichtentritt's writings on music history, criticism, and theory. Leichtentritt's personal compositions include songs, works for solo piano, organ, and small instrumental combinations, and orchestral pieces. These are chiefly represented by manuscript scores, parts and sketches. In addition, there are Leichtentritt's arrangements of compositions by other composers that he used to illustrate concepts for teaching. There are also manuscript and printed scores and parts in the hands of Leichtentritt and other composers. The scrapbooks chiefly contain articles, clippings, correspondence, programs, and promotional material in German and English about various musical performances and composers. Leichtentritt's writings consist of manuscript and typescript drafts of articles, essays, critical commentaries, and analyses. The writings also contain materials for his book Music of the Western Nations, which was published posthumously by Nicolas Slonimsky in 1956; his unfinished autobiography; and a draft of his dissertation. - Contents Note
