Winter Park Art Festival

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the largest art festivals in Central Florida and one of the most prestigious outdoor fine arts exhibits in the United States. This annual event was first organized in 1960 with over 90 exhibitors and cash prizes; today it attracts over 340,000 visitors from all over the state.

In 1999 over 1,600 artists applied to participate in the Festival. Three nationally known judges, viewing slides of the artwork submitted, selected 260 artists who competed in eleven categories for $60,000 in prizes. In addition, 5,000 students from local public and private schools displayed their work in the Student Art Exhibit. Providing assistance to the new artist in travel expenses, booths, and displays, the committee began the Emerging Artist program in 1997.

Busy Park Avenue in Winter Park is closed for the three-day event while visitors wend their way through art displays, listen to musicians in Central Park, and purchase posters and tee-shirts. Parents also bring their children to one of several free hands-on workshops sponsored by the Orlando Museum of Art of the Crealde School of Art.

The first-prize-winning artist receives a $10,000 prize, and his/her Best-of-Show artwork is presented to the City of Winter Park to be displayed in the Winter Park Public Library, which has become repository for the collection of award-winning works.
