Washington County 150th Anniversary
This county's sesquicentennial celebration
incorporated regional history into a number of community
activities. A regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners was
conducted in 150-year-old costumes and in old-fashioned modes of
speech, to the entertainment of residents. A photography contest
was designed to produce images commemorating the county's unique
qualities. Other events included a quilt exhibit, a county employee
reunion, and a presentation by fifth-grade students to the Board of
Commissioners about issues of concern to their generation. The
celebration is documented in text, a videotape, photographs, and
county publications.
