Heartland Chautauqua in Lexington
This revival of the traveling tent show that
flourished during the early 20th century was held in
Lexington, Missouri during the week of June 7 through 12,
1999. Five history scholars took the stage to portray actual
Civil War figures in period costumes, presenting topics that
stimulated discussions on war, racism, women's roles,
literature of the time, and courage. The original Chautauquas
were both entertainment and education for their largely rural
audiences. The Heartland Chautauqua, which preserves that
legacy, is documented on video and audio tape and in 14 pages
of text, 28 photographs, news clippings, and promotional
materials.
