College World Series
This annual baseball tournament is held in
Omaha's Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium for nine days each June. An
open stadium with real grass on the field, it has been the
site of the College World Series since 1950. Attendance has
grown from 17,805 in 1950 to 206,639 in 1999, owing to support
from College World Series of Omaha, Inc., a non-profit
organization formed in 1967 to make the series profitable and
keep it in Omaha. Local service clubs such as Kiwanis and
Lions become extended families to the baseball teams during
their stay in Omaha, ensuring that their needs are met and
that they have all the comforts of home. At the 50th
anniversary CWS in 1999, a new addition was the Opening
Ceremonies at Rosenblatt, featuring introduction of the teams
in Olympics style, followed by musical entertainment and
fireworks. The event preserves the best of old-fashioned
baseball-teamwork, sportsmanship, and playing for the love of
the game-- while infusing it with the modern appeal of a
sports fest.
Included with the text and photographs documenting
CWS are a 50th anniversary commemorative plaque given to
participants and a commemorative baseball given to children for
autographs.
