Pinehurst: Golf Links to the Past

The Tufts Archives, located at the Given Memorial Library in Pinehurst, NC, house a unique collection of golf documents, memorabilia, and photographs documenting pioneering legends of the game, the Tufts family and Donald Ross, America's premiere golf course architect. Richard S. Tufts, the grandson of the founder of Pinehurst and a past president of the USGA, was well acquainted with Pinehurst's importance to the game of golf in America. The Tufts Foundation thus made a substantial grant both for the construction of the Archives wing, built in 1975, and for the purpose of collecting, cataloging, and displaying records, memorabilia and artifacts to preserve the history of Pinehurst.

The Tufts Archives house the John G. Hemmer Photo Collection, 80,000 photographic negatives spanning nearly 40 years of Pinehurst history, and many original Donald Ross golf course plans. The story of Pinehurst's famed golf courses, their birth and development, the tournaments and players - professional and amateur, men and women - exists in the Archives' document files, photos and newspapers.

A lecture series is provided free of charge on the second Saturday of most months. Some of the subjects researched by patrons of the Tufts Archives are: golf course architecture, horticulture and landscape architecture; famous visitors to Pinehurst; and every aspect of golf history.

Project documentation consists of a brochure.
