Limberlost Nature Photography Contest
Held in Geneva, Indiana, at Limberlost State
Historic Park each September and October, this photography contest
is in its 16th year in 2000. The photography contest commemorates
the work of Gene Stratton-Porter as a nature photographer.
Techniques and photographic equipment have changed greatly since
Stratton-Porter carried as much as 100 pounds of camera equipment
and glass plates through the swampland of the Limberlost; however,
the art of nature photography remains very much the same. This
event was designed to increase awareness of the natural history of
Indiana, and to promote nature as the subject for amateur
photographers. Entries are judged by a panel of experts and prizes
awarded at a special luncheon reception. In 1991, the contest was
opened to children as a special category. Getting children
interested in the natural world was a goal close to
Stratton-Porter's heart.
Project materials include four pages of background
text, eight winning photographs on disk, a brochure and entry form
for the 1999 contest, newspaper articles, and a video, "Voice of
the Limberlost."
