USS Constellation

The last all-sail ship built by the United States Navy and the only surviving naval vessel of the Civil War still afloat, it recently underwent a $9 million restoration. The project will focus on the period from 1859 to 1861, during which the Constellation was flagship of the U.S. African Squadron that performed a military mission to interdict the international slave trade off the west coast of Africa. The ship not only served as headquarters for the operation, but also captured three slave ships, one of which carried 705 African captives who were subsequently freed.
