In 1943, Arnie Robbins, a heavy equipment operator stationed in Iceland, saw Anne Hass in a group photograph a buddy had received from home. He prevailed on his pal to encourage Anne to write to him, and she offered to be Arnie's "homefront reporter." Friendship blossomed into romance, and in June 1945, while in New York on a two-week leave, Arnie proposed that he and Anne marry and spend his furlough as their honeymoon. Their marriage endured until Arnie's death in 1994.
