Coleridge Jemmott was Sergeant of the Guard in a segregated quartermaster unit which served in Northern Africa from November 1942 to October 1943 and subsequently in Italy until the end of the war. His collection, donated by his daughter several years after his death, consists of only 21 photographs, but their vivid depictions of soldiers in chow lines, taking target practice, and just hanging around are as eloquent as an interview or letter in providing a feel for daily life in uniform away from the front lines.
