War in Europe was declared on September 1, 1939, just two days before Donald Burrows turned 18. He enlisted in the Army and was made a rifleman; not too long afterwards, he transferred and became a bugler. He was stationed on the Hawaiian Islands when Pearl Harbor was bombed; he remembers twice being prevented from sounding the call to arms by officers, in spite of standing orders. Sent to the Pacific Theater, he served in the Guadalcanal Campaign and contracted malaria four times before finally being sent home.
