Captured on a combat patrol in the Battle of the Bulge. Prisoner for two days. American planes were strafing the road. It blew the whistle to get off the road. Another fellow and I headed out to the woods and didn't return when the whistle was blowing to get back in line. We stayed covered with snow for the rest of the day and at night started to walk toward the sound of the battle.

The next morning, we encountered our troops, who welcomed us with hails of tracer bullets. We were educated in our training that no German can swear like an American. And we did. For five minutes we called them everything we could think of. Subsequently we heard, "Are you guys GIs?" Which was followed by more swearing. Then they allowed us back into the unit.
