During the four years that he spent in the Army, Technical Sergeant Raymond Lippman was a prolific correspondent: he wrote an estimated 2,500 letters to his family, high school friends, and comrades he met during training at Camp Lee, Virginia, and Camp Upton, New York. Many of the letters that he received in return are part of his VHP collection. Along with his descriptive introductions, these letters stand as a treasure trove of information about Army culture and the World War II era in general. In addition, his letters to his mother and his diary provide a glimpse into his time on the "craggy, volcanic-rock isles," as he described the Aleutians.
