New Jersey native Norman Schatell enlisted in the Navy in 1943, eventually reaching the rank of Gunner’s Mate Third Class. An artist in his civilian life, Schatell created over 350 original sketches filling three scrapbooks (a portion of which are presented here), documenting his experiences in Australia, the Philippines, and Hawaii between October 1943 to March 1946. Depicting everything from saltwater showers to the interactions between Australian and American soldiers, Schatell’s sketches illustrate the humorous and serious sides of life in the Navy--sometimes hinting at both in the same cartoon!
