Along with a sense of patriotism, the tangible benefits of military service--such as earning money for college--figured high on Adam Holt's list of reasons for enlisting in the Army in 2004. Beginning with the rigors of boot camp to his deployment to Iraq, military life demanded a lot of him in return. During the fifteen months he spent in Mosul and Baghdad, he learned to cope with the constant physical stress of combat, and of urban combat in particular. A week before he was scheduled to return to the States, an improvised explosive device went off in a tool shed on the property his team was investigating; the blast broke his leg and sent shrapnel into his shoulder and the back of his head. Despite these injuries, he explains that overall, his military experience was a positive experience for him, as it gave him a new appreciation for the fragility of life.
