The veteran served in the Iowa National Guard from 02/16/1916 until 02/1917 when he joined the Army and served from 07/1917 to 05/1919. Then he again served in the National Guard from 05/1919 until 12/14/1922. He was promoted to second lieutenant after World War I while he was serving the Iowa National Guard. He also served in the Mexican Campaign.
