- The veteran earned the Medal of Honor for his service on 05/05/1967 near the Song Tra Cau riverbed in Vietnam. When he learned that members of a 101st Airborne Division unit had suffered casualties during an intense firefight with the enemy, he volunteered to lead a flight of six UH-1D helicopters to carry reinforcements to the embattled force and to evacuate wounded personnel. He returned repeatedly to evacuate personnel under fire.
