Thursday - July 20th [1944]
My God June - I can't stand it - I simply *cannot* stand it! *Seventy-five letters in two days*! Oh Christ - I feel like screaming or committing rape or dropping a stitch - I'm completely unnerved - do you hear me - *unnerved*! *unnerved*!! *unnerved* !!!!!! Oh darling, *can* you, *could* you ever - *will* you ever know what its [sic] done to me? All of a sudden I'm breathing again - and tasting food and seeing color and almost burning up with excitement. For two and three quarters hours last night I went through an emotional physic which left me wet and limp to wobble my way back to my bed at one in the morning! I had returned to this ship late in the afternoon - and playing a hunch I went in to the beach post office about 7 last night The guys - who by this time know me as well as their own mothers - told me with a choked sob that there was still no mail - "but wait, have faith - it will surely get here some day. Look - here's a whole sack of newspapers your ship has forwarded to you. Go back to your ship an read them - and forget about your mail.
