Marine Private Norman Brown was in on most of the major island invasions during the battle of control of the Pacific Theater in World War II. In his recollection, the landing on Tarawa was the toughest, the fighting after he landed on Iwo Jima was the worst, but Saipan might have been the most intense experience of all, especially since his buddy Elmer was killed there. Brown admits in his oral history interview that Saipan gave him nightmares for years afterwards.
