While he had hoped to go into photography rather than medicine, during his time in Vietnam with the Air Force, Charles Creel, Jr. served diligently in the dispensary at Phan Rang to treat his wounded and sick comrades. In his interview, he discusses the concentration and focus necessary to address incoming casualties. While in country, he also used his skills to assist the local civilian population; he worked in orphanages and nearby villages, and at one point, rescued a Vietnamese child who had stepped on a land mine.
