At the age of 18, Robley Henry Rex had never ventured more than about 10 miles from his home in western Kentucky. So when Army recruiters offered him the chance to travel, he enlisted. After training in Kentucky and Maryland, he shipped out to Germany to serve with the Army of Occupation. Had he been a couple of years older, Rex might have faced German troops in battle. Instead, during his post-war service he found the German people to be warm hosts to the Americans.
