Hospitals require much more than doctors and nurses to make them run smoothly, particularly when they are in the middle of a war zone. Enlisting in the Army in 1966, Captain Richard Fowler had initially intended to go into Army intelligence, but wound up serving on the administrative end of military medicine in Vietnam, first as a company commander at the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang, and then as adjutant for a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) at Camp Evans and Quang Tri. His position as administrator did not remove him from the realities of war: casualties--and incoming mortar attacks--were a fact of everyday life.
