German immigrant and master cabinet maker Henry Steinway founded Steinway and Sons in 1853 in a Manhattan, New York, loft. His first piano was built in the kitchen of his German home, and he had built 482 pianos by the time he established the Steinway Co. Piano No. 483, his first official company product, sold for $550. Today, the Steinway Co. produces approximately 5,000 pianos per year.
