Portraits of
the Presidents and First Ladies, 1789-Present contains an extensive collection of
paintings and photographs of our nation's leaders and their wives. What can be
learned from examining such portraits? Compare the portraits of John F. Kennedy and his
wife Jacqueline Kennedy with those of his two predecessors and their wives, Dwight
Eisenhower and his wife Mamie Eisenhower and Harry Truman and his wife Bess Truman. Does
anything about their appearance indicate why the Kennedys were seen as different from
their predecessors? Anything about the way in which the photographs were taken?
