Unit III: Lesson Five

Newspapers from the Great Depression Era

  1. You may wish to include a study of what newspapers of the 1930s reveal about family life during the Great Depression. March 6, 1933, is a particularly good date to use, since on this day, three of the headlines are:
  2. "Roosevelt orders a 4-day bank holiday, puts embargo on gold, calls Congress,"
"Hitler Bloc wins a Reich majority; rules in Prussia,"
"Bewildered city [New York] still pays in cash."

  3. Sources for this lesson may be found in the school or local public library and include:
  4. Newspapers from the 1930s.
Microfilm of newspapers from the 1930s.
