Day One Homework

Assign students to read the memo from Mr. Amerson or one of the following excerpts from From the Hidewood: Celebration, Town School, Car Crazy, or Sonny Gets a Car.

Day Four Homework

Each student will write an essay answering these two questions:

  1. How did what you read in Mr. Amerson's writings compare with what you read and saw in the American Memory collections? Compare and contrast.
  2. In what ways were Mr. Amerson's experiences like your life; in what ways were they different? In what ways were the experiences portrayed in the American Memory collections like and unlike your life?

Support your answers with specific examples from your reading, your search in the American Memory collections, and your life.

Activity One Homework

Assign students to read the memo from Mr. Amerson or one of the following excerpts from From the Hidewood: Celebration, Town School, Car Crazy, or Sonny Gets a Car.

Students will brainstorm for synonyms to expand the list of search terms. For example, in the chapter Celebration, students will possibly come up with the words or phrases: Fourth of July, swimming, firecrackers, lakes. A synonym for firecracker could also be fireworks. Each term generates a completely separate image result.

Activity Four Homework

Each student will write an essay answering these two questions:
  1. Was the recreation and entertainment enjoyed by the Amerson's typical or atypical (not typical) of standard society of the 1920s and 30s?
  2. In what ways were their lives like and unlike your life?

Support your answers with evidence from your search in the American Memory collections.
