Hopi Woman Making Pottery
Hopi Woman Making Pottery

OBJECTIVE OBSERVATION (What do I see in the photograph?)
In this photo, I see a woman seated on the ground and dressed in clothing which covers most of her body. The woman has dark skin. She has her hands in a bowl. Based on the shadows in the photo and on the fact that she is squinting, she is looking into the sun. There are five pots on the ground around the woman. Among the pots on the ground is a flat, rock-like piece which has something on it. To the right rear of the woman is a pile of sticks. Behind the woman is a building with shadows cast upon it.

SUBJECTIVE OBSERVATION (How do I interpret the photograph?)
I believe that this Hopi Indian woman is posing for this picture based on the fact that the pots/bowls are arranged to be seen. I also see the shadow of the photographer in the lower left hand corner of the photo. Based on the woman's clothing, I would say that this photo was taken during the cold months of the year. She appears to be using her hands to make a new piece of pottery. She has displayed other pieces of pottery that she has made and may be willing to sell them. I believe that the building behind her may be her home. The flat rock has dirt/clay on it that this woman uses in making the pottery. The photographer wanted to capture this Hopi Indian woman making these pots/bowls for posterity.
