<p>Do Not Leave Me Mother Darling.</p>

<p>(The last words of &ldquo;Tad&rdquo; Lincoln to his mother, as she left the room in a paroxysm of grief, were, &ldquo;Do not leave me mother darling.&rdquo;)</p>

<p>Do not leave me, mother darling, <lb>
Give me one fond, parting kiss! <lb>
Beck&apos;ning me, I see the angels <lb>
In their home of heavenly bliss. <lb>
I am getting weaker mother, <lb>
And I soon shall cross the shore; <lb>
Let me rest my eyes upon you; <lb>
Mother do not shut the door!</p>

<p>Chorus: <lb>
Do not leave me mother darling! <lb>
For I soon shall cross the shore; <lb>
Let me rest my eyes upon you; <lb>
Mother do not shut the door.</p>

<p>Mother dear have you forgotten, <lb>
When the war was in the land. <lb>
And my father was the chieftain <lb>
Of the glorious Union band; <lb>
And the drummer boy whose brother <lb>
Was court martialed in the war <lb>
Why, you&apos;re crying! do not leave me! <lb>
Mother do not shut the door!</p>

<p>&ldquo;Just because the poor, sick stripling <lb>
Slept an hour while standing guard. <lb>
He must die and leave poor mother; <lb>
Heaven help us! it is hard!&rdquo; <lb>
Then my father, good kind hearted, <lb>
Told him he need cry no more. <lb>
God has heard your fervent praying <lb>
For he never shuts the door!</p>

<p>Mother dear, bend low and listen; <lb>
What the Savior say&apos;s tis true. <lb>
And he said, &ldquo;as ye show mercy, <lb>
Mercy I will show to you.&rdquo; <lb>
Now I see my father pleading, <lb>
As the drummer boy of yore, <lb>
Softly mother! see the angels <lb>
Holding wide open the door!</p>
