Coolidge Papers. Advertising - General, 1923-28.

Letters, flyers, statistics, and newspaper advertisements in the case file illuminate corporate advertising practices of the period. Documents include a January 20, 1925, letter from Dorrance, Sullivan & Company Advertising to Edward T. Clark, the president's secretary, enclosing statistics showing the "percentage of gross sales appropriated for advertising by typical national advertisers," among them Cadillac, Packard, Studebaker, Goodyear, Colgate, Palmolive, Campbell Soup, Arrow Collars, Eastman Kodak, Sears Roebuck, and Sherwin Williams; statistics showing the percentages spent on advertising for different commodity groups, including automobiles, candies and chewing gum, fountain pens, phonographs, tobacco, department stores, and mail order houses; an exchange of letters between the White House and two insurance companies regarding use of the presidential name and words in advertising; a series of ads from the 1928 advertising campaign of the American Trademark Association emphasizing the importance of buying merchandise "Made in the U.S.A." by American workers; a letter of support for the campaign from Secretary of Labor James Davis; and the items listed below.
