Original, handwritten note on a scrap of white, blue-lined paper that the vactioning President Coolidge gave to his secretary Everett Sanders to type and distribute to the newspaper correspondents at a press conference at Rapid City, South Dakota, on August 2, 1927. The note reads: "I do not choose to run for president in 1928." President Coolidge made this announcement fully one and a half years before the end of his term. The historic slip of paper was acquired at auction by the Library of Congress during the 1980s, thus coming into the collection independently of the bulk of the Coolidge Papers, which were donated by the Coolidge family.
