Frances Carpenter Collection, 1875-1960

100 items, primarily scrapbooks relating to Frank G. Carpenter’s book, Carp’s Washington, which was arranged and edited by his daughter, Frances Carpenter, in 1960. Includes newspaper articles and columns by Carpenter; clippings about his lecture tours, his work in Washington, D.C., and his death in China; correspondence between Frances Carpenter and the Washington Star; reviews of Carp’s Washington; and proposed illustrations for the book. Also letters to Carpenter from Alexander Graham Bell, Calvin Coolidge, Frederick Douglass, Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, and Booker T. Washington. Gift of Frances Carpenter Huntington, 1969.

Frances Carpenter was an officer of this organization, which was founded in 1925 to bring together women interested in geography, anthropology, world exploration, and allied disciplines. Her membership file contains completed membership forms from 1931 to 1972; professional files; correspondence to and from other officers, 1927-1972, including some correspondence relating to her husband; printed material; lists of active members; notes on her travels; a typed introduction by her father about her; photocopies of newspaper clippings, including her obituary; and one negative showing her standing next to a statue of Buddha.

Two letters, dated January 9, 1906 and April 22, 1917 are available in the selection from the papers that is available online, via American Memory. Also among the online items is a letter from Bell to Mabel Hubbard Bell, August 28, 1906, where Bell mentions Carpenter's publication of an interview with Bell in the Evening Star. The Frank G. Carpenter collection

One box (.25 linear feet) of material. Includes biographical material: articles, photographs, books, as well as letters from 13 women in response to a survey Carpenter conducted. Also includes original correspondence from well-known women’s rights leaders.

The Frances Carpenter Huntington collection

Two boxes, 5 scrapbooks, and one volume (1.5 linear feet). The materials include correspondence (1927-1968), scripts of radio talks on children’s books and women in the arts, and the original manuscripts of the books South American Wonder Tales (1969) and the Story of East Africa (1967). The scrapbooks contain reviews, bibliographies, book jackets and illustrations, clippings and photos.

The Frank G. Carpenter collection, NUCMC Number MS80-304

About 3 linear feet of newspaper clippings, ca. 1880 to 1967, assembled by Carpenter in connection with his work as Washington, D.C., correspondent for the Cleveland Leader, relating to Presidential and White House activities, including campaigns, conventions, families, and personal lives; and clippings added to the collection after Carpenter’s death, probably by family members.
