The SGML Working Group has agreed on several new implementations for the use of SGML files in American Memory collections.
- Due to the unavailability of any freeware SGML Viewer (Panorama Publisher is now >$50) and frequent complaints and questions from users, SGML will be de-emphasized in the page layout for those collections that currently display SGML text. The SGML links will be moved to the bottom of every HTML page of a text document and link to an intermediate explanatory page. This will be implemented as the programming schedule permits.
- The SGML link will be reworded and standardized to the following: "Information <link to info page> about the SGML version of this document."
- The intermediate page will read as follows:
About the SGML version
In addition to the full text that can be viewed directly through your web browser, this document is also available encoded in Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) according the American Memory Document Type Definition(DTD)<link to DTD page>.
An SGML viewer <link to amviewer file> is required.
SGML version <link to file.sgm> of this document (file size in Kb).
Back to previous page<link to previous page>.
- Omnimark 5.0 is freely available (no license requirement). All users will need to update their resident copy of Omnimark to 5.0 in the near future. Further instructions to follow via email.
- Certain default limitations built into the DTD declarations have led to erroneous parsing error reports. The AmMem DTD will be modified to set these limitations to 9999 where possible (e.g., GRPCNT, LITLEN, TAGLEN, ATTSPLEN). Individuals will need to update their resident copy of the amsgml.dec file. Further instructions to follow via email.
- All "entityrc" and "catalog" files for ALL collections need to be updated to correct a backwards-compatibility problem with old Panorama viewers. This will occur by automatic-processing and as programming schedules permit.
If you would like to contribute to the SGML Working Group's future discussions, please contact Martha Anderson.

The most recent Special Keying Instructions have been added to the Text QR site. These are revisions based on our learning curve with the SIG/DCL contractor's keying activities. See the July update for the George Washington Papers (in WordPerfect) and Rare Book's Printed Ephemera (in WordPerfect). Configure your browser to use the Web WordPerfect reader (see Tools) or RIGHT click on the link to save the file to your C:\ drive.

OmniMark 4.0 Parser installation now available. Check out the Parsing and Installation instructions on Using the NSGMLS Parser in NDL. NOTE: New users should install OmniMark CI 4.0, but current users do not have to upgrade yet. If you already have OmniMark 3.1 installed on your system, you're fine.
