- Summary
- THE SPELLBOOK was commissioned by the Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony conducted by Calvin Hofer with generous support from Karen Combs and Lynn Wegener. The premiere performance was given by the Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony, Calvin Hofer, director, at the Best of the West Festival in Grand Junction on December 6, 2019. -- THE SPELLBOOK is a side-story to my interactive and educational composition THE CONDUCTOR’S SPELLBOOK for orchestra. -- In THE SPELLBOOK, a group of 2nd and 3rd graders attend a local wind ensemble concert. After the performance, when the teachers round up all the children to go home, young Tony Stradivarius sneaks away. Alone in the concert hall, with all the instruments lying on the stage, Tony approaches the podium and discovers the magical Conductor’s Spellbook. The spellbook teaches Tony how to conduct, about how the instruments vibrate and even some magical spells to make the instruments come to life and play. Eventually Tony gets carried away experimenting with magical spells, causing him to lose control of the ensemble. The instruments play so loudly that the concert hall begins to rumble and the lights go out! -- As THE SPELLBOOK story continues, Tony finds himself in darkness carefully crawling around the stage. Light is provided by the spellbook’s magical glistening, which reflects off the concert hall’s vast pillars and balconies, as well as the shiny instruments on stage. At the back of the stage Tony discovers the ominous timpani and percussion section. The low woodwinds play a creepy and groovy melody which moves through the wind ensemble as Tony finds his way... -- For more information on Paul Dooley’s music, visit: www.pauldooley.net -- www.conductorsspellbook.com.
