<mods:abstract>Documentary directed by Arthur Dong containing archival footage, still photographs and numerous interviews provide a multi-layered evocation of the socio-cultural milieu fof San Francisco in the 1930s from the points of view of the performers, management and audience. Performers include Paul Wing ("the Chinese Astaire"), and Dorothy Takahashi Toy. Dance excerpts include a tap dance by Paul Wing and Dorothy Toy from the film "Happiness Ahead" (1934). A specialty dance on pointe by Dorothy Toy and a tap dance by Paul Wing in the film "Deviled Ham" (1937). Also a tap dance by Dorothy Toy and Paul Wing from the film "With Best Dishes" (1959).

It was the swinging 30s. The big bands of the 40s. It was San Francisco night life Baghdad by the Bay. And the crowds were packing the nation's premiere all-Chinese nightclub, Forbidden City. Like the Cotton Club of Harlem which featured America's finest African American entertainers, Forbidden City gained an international reputation with its unique showcase of Chinese American performers in eye-popping all-American extravaganzas. Part "That's Entertainment" and part PBS, "Forbidden City, U.S.A." captures this little-known chapter of entertainment history and takes it center stage.</mods:abstract>
